KIAMA OUTCLASS SOUTH COAST UNITED IN SEASON OPENER

The Gordon MacDonald Electrical Kiama Youth Grade team defeated South Coast United 4 - 1 in the first round of the season. A strong opening from the Kiama boys saw plenty of pressure put on South Coast. A bustling run down the right flank from Chris Hughes ended up with his cross taking a deflection from the backpeddling defence and a South Coast own goal had Kiama 1 - 0 in front.
For the rest of the half Kiama lost their way and struggled to hold onto the game. A fine diving save to his right by young keeper James Terry kept Kiama in front. Their lead didn't last long as a long ball split the flat Kiama defence and South Coast United equalised.
The second half brought about a revitalised Kiama and they showed their potential by regaining their grip on the game. The defence of Paul Thayer, Michael Broad and Brad Tuohy lifted their intensity and United couldn't find a way through.
Craig Costello battled his way into the opposition penalty box and was brought down in a desperate tackle. A hobbling Danny Pridham converted the penalty to put Kiama back in front.
Matt Gallagher replaced Pridham and his fresh legs and combination with Dave Kay and Scott Schofield strengthened the Kiama midfield. Good pressure by the Kiama strikers Wade Mathews and Costello was too much for South Coast defence and Costello slotted a well taken goal to take Kiama 3 - 1 up.
Good teamwork and determination resulted in a corner to Kiama. Another well flighted cross into the box by James Spence saw Costello head home his second goal and Kiama finished the game deserved winners 4 - 1.
