QUARRIER GIRLS WIN FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON

Last Sunday the Kiama Quarriers Ladies Soccer Team won their first game of the season when they beat local rivals Shellharbour 1 – 0.  The girls have been building up for this win and their form in recent weeks has been very good.  The win was like a “bursting of the dam” and the players were in great spirits after the final whistle.  They were further elated when three of the players, Nicole Petit, Karen Moses and Hailey Beringer were all selected to attend trials for the District Representative side.

The game was a torrid affair and both teams took their turn to defend for long periods.  Kiama had the better of the game in the first half and opened the scoring with a penalty in the twenty-fifth minute.  Beringer hit a long drive at goal and a Shellharbour defender used her hand to deflect the ball away.  The referee awarded a penalty but it is more than likely that the ball was goal bound.  Midfielder Hailey Beringer stepped up and for the second week in a row slotted away the spot kick.

The second half was a role reversal for the girls as Shellharbour changed tactics and threw extra players forward.  The girls defended well and held on for a very satisfying 1 – 0 win.

All of the team played well and it was hard to pick out any individuals from the pack but two who shone were sweeper Danielle Jovanov and defender Sasha Maher.  Sasha had a top game at left back and was the Kiama Leagues Club Player of the Match.

The girl’s next game is at 7.15pm on Wednesday night at McLennan Park, Kembla Grange against Helensburgh Thistle.  The team believes they are on a roll and are confidant of knocking over the Thistle.
